Legend has it that Happy Lake was named by three pioneering bachelors extolling the virtues of being without women. The fishing must have been pretty darn good there! But regardless of the fish stock, whether you’re male or female and with or without female company, you probably won’t be too happy hiking to this cheerfully named subalpine lake. It requires a grueling climb of nearly 4,000 feet up a dry ridge.
But if you do indeed reach this jovial body of water, you’ll quickly rejoice in its quiet meadows, heather parklands and solitude. The masses are at nearby Boulder, making this lake a happy destination indeed. And if the lake isn’t enough, scout around along the ridge leading to it for sweeping views of the emerald Elwha Valley and the impressive snow and rock wall known as the Bailey Range.
From the start waste no time gaining elevation. Through thick carpets of salal, the trail winds its way up Happy Lake Ridge. Understory vegetation transitions to huckleberry and bear grass as the way gets even steeper. After almost three miles of unrelenting climbing, the trail reaches the 4,500-foot ridge crest. The grade eases as the trail ascends a small knoll before leveling out. Come upon a stunning viewpoint. Stare out at Appleton Pass all the way to Obstruction Point. Enjoy more views as you progress along the ridge. After traversing subalpine forest and heather parkland, the way makes one final climb topping out at 5,280 feet. Contemplate walking up one of the adjacent knolls for excellent viewing, otherwise head down the Happy Lake Trail taking off right.
After descending 400 feet through lovely sub-alpine country reach the jovial tarn in a half mile. Situated in a small cirque, the grassy-shored lake is indeed a happy sight. And as far as the fishing, it’s still pretty good.
