Quick Facts

Land Agency: (National Park Service) Ross Lake National Recreation Area
Roundtrip: 3.8 miles
Elevation gain: 600 feet
Access: At Colonial Creek Campground just past Milepost 130 on SR 20. Trailhead located in west loop of campground. Park at campground entrance and walk .1 mile to trail.
Notes: Dogs permitted but must be leashed.

With fall now in high gear, snow has begun to blanket the high country. But you can still enjoy wonderful views of jagged North Cascade Peaks by taking to this relatively new trail in the heart of the Ross lake National Recreation Area. Topping out at an elevation of only 1875 feet, snowfall is rare here. Pick a crisp clear autumn day to take to this gentle and delightful trail.
The wide and smooth path winds and weaves through attractive hemlock and pine forests before topping out on a broad ridge above manmade Diablo Lake. A series of view points offer glimpses of the blue-green lake as well as some of the impressive peaks that surround it. Sourdough Mountain spans the northern horizon. Jack Mountain dominates the east. To the south, Colonial Peak blows its icy breath upon you. Peer westward to craggy Davis Peak.
The Thunder Knob Trail was designed to make it possible (with a little help) for visitors in wheelchairs to be able to enjoy this North Cascade landscape as well. Young children will delight in tackling this trail, and the smooth tread makes it a pure joy for a short trail run.
Don’t let the late autumn chill keep you off the trails. Strike out for Thunder Knob for a good North Cascade jaunt year round.

Special Note: This is the 100th edition of Hike of the Week. Thank you for your interest and support and we look forward to bringing you the next 100 hikes.
